The 2nd Preparatory Workshop

 

 

The 2nd preparatory workshop for South East Asia Europe Network for building training and education capacities in plastic recycling in Laos and Vietnam (SEA-PLASTIC-EDU) project was officially held in Vientiane Capital, Laos from 10th – 14th September, 2018.

The officially opening session of the 2nd preparatory was held in the conference room at New Rose Hotel, Vientiane Capital, Laos. Hereby, there were representatives from project partners, university professors, researchers and students, ministries and the media who had shared their experience of the waste management in general as well as specifically on the plastic recycling sectors.

SUSTAINABILITY OF SEA-PLASTIC-EDU

The opening session also opened rooms for all stakeholders to have discussion on how the SEA-PLASTIC-EDU project will work on its sustainability, to get further cooperation and its level of contribution on how the project could make the positive impacts on people awareness and the environment. SEA-PLASTIC-EDU project aimed for a long term impact particularly on the educational level, since the main work is to provide courses related to waste management and the plastic recycling. Importantly, the project is setting up two training hubs at partner universities which are in Vientiane Capital, Laos and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

OUTCOMES OF THE 2ND PREPARATORY WORKSHOP

Stakeholder workshop results, the country profile and city profiles were completely compiled. NUoL demands for waste management in general and spefic plastic aspect, where at Vietnamese universities, they are mainly focusing on the plastic sector. Therefore, there are 16 chapters developed according to the needs and suitability of the local contexts. Each partner will further have developed the abstracts and contents, which will be presented and discussed in the upcoming meeting, in Vienna, on 10th – 14th December, 2018.

“MoNRE is currently continuing dissemination of knowledge and awareness on plastic usage and its impacts on both human health and the environment”.

“Currently, there was only about 50% of the people who live in Vientiane Capital that have access to the waste management services”. Mr. Sonethavy Phommasone, the director of division of Waste transportation and services, Department of Vientiane Urban Development Administration Authority (VUDAA).

2nd Preparatory Workshop Field Visits

National University of Laos

The National University of Laos (NUOL) is the first comprehensive or full-fledged university in the history of Lao PDR. Initially, the NUOL conducted the teaching and learning-based activities starting with 7 faculties, 6 Offices and one School of Foundation Studies. Currently, 2016-2017 the NUOL is comprised of 13 faculties, 2 institutes, 1 central library, 3centers, 1 hospital, 11 offices, and 1 School for Gifted and Ethnic Students.

Faculty of Environmental Sciences (FES) is the main involved faculty within SEA-PLASTIC-EDU project. FES is working in cooperation with different government sectors to tackles the environmental impacts and building people awareness in Laos.

Currently, there are an establishment of waste separations, products from plastic waste, waste recycle bank within the campus for students and the surrounding communities to get involved.

The project’s Training Hub on plastic recycling will be also established within FES campus.

 

 

 

 

 

Green Environment Import-Export

Green Environment Import-Export Sole Co., Ltd is a plastic recycling company located at 32 Km in the south Vientiane Capital. The company’s building and its facility were built on the area of 57,000 m2. The main activity of the company is to gather different types of used plastic and turn them into plastic flake and grain.

At the moment, the company can separate, wash, dry, crush and produce plastic flake of about 2,400-3,000 tonnes/year, while it can produce plastic grain about 1,400-1,800 ton/year. Most products are exported to China, Vietnam, and other countries, while few are sold domestically.

       

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

32km Landfill, Vientiane Capital, Laos

There are 17 landfills in the Laos which are located in including Vientiane City (Km 32), Luangprabang, Thakhek, Savannakhet, and Pakse but mainly in the suburbs of the provincial towns and 40% of solid waste are collected and disposed of at these landfills.

KM32 final disposal landfill located at suburban area of Vientiane Capital received around 150 to 200 tonnes of waste daily, of which 40 to 50% are organic. Landfill operation in KM32 is a typical opening dumping without any compaction and soil cover.
